The intestine

The intestine is part of the digestive system and extends from the stomach to the anus. It allows food to be converted into nutrients and thus absorbed. Problems or disturbances in these functions can compromise an individual's health and well-being.

INTESTINOgenes studies the genetic variant that determines lactose intolerance, consisting of a polymorphism that alters the expression of the LCT gene. It also detects risk haplotypes in the Major Histocompatibility Complex that are essential for the onset of coeliac disease, and the diagnosis can be excluded if they are not present. Finally, genetic polymorphisms associated with the risk of developing inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis) or Irritable Bowel Syndrome are analysed.

Objectives

Its purpose is to help establish a diagnosis and a plan of action for poorly defined intestinal problems. In the case of gluten or lactose intolerance, it has a direct impact on the diagnosis, confirming or ruling it out, and in the case of inflammatory diseases or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the genetic profile can influence for or against the clinician's suspicions.
